100 years of surrealism: A visit to the Alberto Giacometti exhibition at the Max-Ernst-Museum in Brühl

Alberto Giacometti (1901-1966), the Swiss artist and sculptor, is known to most for his elongated, filigree figures from the creative period after 1945.

Giacometti’s ‘boule suspendue’ (suspended sphere, 1930) can be seen as a draft for both a picture and a sculpture. This important work gained him access to and acceptance in the circle of surrealists around André Breton. Violence and death, but also physicality and the influence of chance, as well as the perception of the unconscious, play an important role in his surreal work.

Max Ernst’s stylistic handwriting is also unmistakable in the exhibition. The two artists worked in neighbouring studios in Paris and met for the first time in 1929. In 1935, Giacometti invited Max Ernst to his Swiss home in Maloja. Not only the friendship between the artists, but also their sculptures bear witness to their surrealist work.

This wonderful exhibition, with over 70 works, can be seen until 15 January 2025. More details can be found on the museum’s website.
